Pressestimmen

Haunting, moving, beautifully written - and based by an extraordinary cast of characters who capture the diversity of modern Turkey. A masterpiece. (Peter Frankopan, author of the no.1 bestselling 'The Silk Roads')One of the best writers in the world today (Hanif Kureishi)Simply magnificent, a truly captivating work of immense power and beauty, on the essence of life and its end. (Philippe Sands)Shafak is the most exciting Turkish novelist to reach western readers in years (Irish Times)A vivid carnival of life and death, cruelty and kindness, love, politics and deep humanity. This is only possible in the hands of a consummate storyteller. Elif Shafak's lyrical command of language and narrative is breathtaking. Brilliant! (Helena Kennedy)Elif Shafak's extraordinary Ten Minutes, 38 Seconds in this Strange World is a work of brutal beauty and consummate tenderness, a wild shout of life from out of the lower depths of destitution and prostitution, indeed from beyond the grave itself. Every page throbs with unruly vitality, the sense- saturating colours scents and sounds of raw Istanbul, all registered with poetic sharpness. It's a book which for all its ordeals is a profoundly moving, at times lyrical, celebration of humanity's obstinate fight for life against the steepest of odds (Simon Schama)A heartbreaking meditation on the ways in which social forces can destroy a life. Elif Shafak can be unsparing, lyrical, political, intimate... Several novels live in this one, and all of them are moving, generous and elegantly written (Juan Gabriel Vasquez)Elif Shafak brings into the written realm what so many others want to leave outside. Spend more than ten minutes and 38 seconds in this world of the estranged. Shafak makes a new home for us in words (Colum McCann)A rich, sensual novel... This is a novel that gives voice to the invisible, the untouchable, the abused and the damaged, weaving their painful songs into a thing of beauty. (Francesca Segal Financial Times)A terrific book. Poetic, poignant, trenchant (Ian Rankin on 'Three Daughters of Eve')

Elif Shafak is truly a master of her craft, and her latest novel entwines both the darkest sides of life with slivers of lightness and hope, of spirit triumphing above the brutalities of human existences, in ways however small. Read through it in a single sitting, as I tend to do with Elif Shafak's novels, and the story still haunts and lingers. 10/10

She is a Turkish writer and writing about Turkish characters in this book too, but her characters are so badly calculated for the Western audience that they are shockingly silly for a Turkish reader. A prostitute from a small town in 60's Turkey thinking in English? Moreover her clients can understand her irony in English? It is like a really bad daily soap opera you see on a low class TV station, what a shame for Booker jury to put this novel on the same list with great authors of our time. Will never read any book from her again.

Leila’s body lies in a trash bin. She is dead but her brain is still functioning. It is said the brain can continue to work for 10 minutes and 38 seconds and it is in this time that Leila runs through the memory of her life. We are taken from her birth, childhood, and the tragic circumstances of her life that led to her eventual murder. Leila has five friends and these are the people that eventually mourn her and give meaning to her life as well as their own. It is also an elegy to the city of Istanbul with all its beauty and its problems. This is a Booker longlisted title and fully deserves to be on the list. It should also be a favorite to win. Leila’s life story is moving and tragic. It is also life affirming. There is much realism here with a skillfully created group of characters. The skilled author even managed to throw in some humor near the end of the book. The conclusion is truly life affirming and brilliant. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I love this writer!

I loved the concept - death may not be instant.. and the reliving of a lifetime of memories during the 10 minutes that it takes for the brain to shut down; the story of the life relived was sad, happy, comedic and utterly beautiful... well worth reading and a great window into a misunderstood and often maligned segment of the population. Great highlight of the importance of friendship and out humanity.
